The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others. In dangerous valleys and hazardous pathways, he will lift some bruised brother to a higher position. That’s a true neighbor. That is what one means by love. We’re going to love everybody. And when it gets dark we’ll be able to stand upright and we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair the stone of hope. I’m going to keep loving humanity, because I know humanity can’t live without love. And I’m going to keep on loving hating people, because somebody’s got to show them the way. Somehow I can’t hate them. I see something of God in the most depraved human being. I am so happy that God made me to live at this point in history. I am maladjusted to injustice. I never intend to adjust myself to racial discrimination. I never intend to adjust myself to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. And so I leave you with the vision of Isaiah: that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The rough places will be plain, and the crooked places will be made straight. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning: ‘My country, ’tis of thee. Sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the Pilgrims’ pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.’ That day we shall bring into full realization the dream of the prophet Joel: that one day all men will sit under their own vine and fig tree, and none shall be afraid. We shall be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: ‘Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!’
