It is almost a definition of a gentleman to say he is one who never inflicts pain. This description is both refined and, as far as it goes, accurate. He is mainly occupied in merely removing the obstacles which hinder the free and unembarrassed action of those about him; and he concurs with their movements rather than takes the initiative himself. His benefits may be considered as parallel to what are called comforts or conveniences in arrangements of a personal nature: like an easy chair or a good fire, which do their part in dispelling cold and fatigue, though nature provides both means of rest and animal heat without them. The true gentleman in like manner carefully avoids whatever may cause a jar or a jolt in the minds of those with whom he is cast; - all collision, or difficulty, or restraint, or suspicion, is 'quite a load' off their minds. Thus, he is ever mindful of the impact that his actions have on others. If he has no rival, then it is his fault; if he has, then it is most likely that his rival's faults are unquestionable.

The main problem of America today is that of political corruption, and until you do something about that, you won't be able to get any reform on anything else. I would like to see the day when you could not buy votes with money or influence; when you could not get special privileges of any kind, but when every American citizen could stand on his own feet and get his own honest share of the wealth of this country. That is the thing I am here to try to bring about, and I don't care whether the great newspapers of this country, which are owned by the money interests, are for me or against me. I am here to fight for what I believe to be honest, and if I am defeated, I am defeated, but I will fight. I may not be able to accomplish much, but at least I can agitate the question, and make the people think. I am going to turn on the light of publicity in every dark corner in the United States, and if the people are with me, we will get rid of some of these boodlers and grafters and make it possible for every man to have an equal chance. It is unquestionable, there must be that for democracy, the basic condition of free citizenship in this country.
